10.8.1 Compare the German, Italian, and Japanese drives for empire in the 1930’s including the 1937 Rape of Nanking (Nanjing) & other atrocities in China & the Stalin-Hitler Pact of 1939
10.8.3 Identify & locate the Allied and Axis powers on a map and discuss the major turning points of the war, the principal theaters of conflict, key strategic decisions, and the resulting war conferences and political resolutions, with emphasis on the importance of geographic factors.
10.8.5 Analyze the Nazi policy of pursuing racial purity, especially against the European Jews; its transformation into the Final Solution and the Holocaust resulted in the murder of six million Jews & four million other Europeans.

Big Idea:
The consequences of apathy, appeasement, and totalitarianism led to a second World War. Learning Goals: 1. Explain the effect failed promises in the Treaty of Versailles had on the rise of dictators and aggression. 2. Describe how the policy of appeasement failed as a foreign policy. 3. How did U.S. decisions to remain isolated as a result of the Depression impact events in Europe. 4. Explain the impact of Japan’s conquests in Asia on relations with U.S. and the world. 5. Identify Allied and Axis powers. 6. Determine methods used by Nazis to isolate victims of the Holocaust. 7. Trace the military strategies of the war using maps of the three “theaters” of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. 8. Describe the roles played by Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin and Hitler in managing the military strategies. |
